Kassandra Dimopoulou started directing operas in 2011 right after assisting a well-known theatre director, Stathis Livathinos (currently artistic director of the National Theatre in Athens), in his production of "Carmen", starring some of the most acclaimed Greek actors. Since then, Kassandra has been directing operas with great passion.
La Serva Padrona(2011- 2015) Opera buffa by G. B. Pergolesi. After the premiere in Athens (May 2011) there were more than 20 performances and 4 different productions and casts in Greece (Athens and Thessaloniki), Germany (Stuttgart) and UK (Island Hall). The opera was also performed at the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Athens in 2015, supported by the italian government, during the International Italian Language Week. This opera is still going around performing with at least a couple of performances per year.
Antigone(2012-2013) Opera by Tommaso Traetta. Kassandra mixed the rare- performed opera and the drama of Sophocles, creating a unique atmosphere. The opera was performed with an innovative orchestration- mix of electronic music. The performance enjoyed a great success at the 16th International Festival of Ancient Greek Drama in Cyprus. Antigone was performed in the ancient theatre of Curium. It was repeated in Thessaloniki (Radio City) in November 2013.
Otello(2012- 2013) Opera by G. Verdi. In 2012 there has been a semi-staged performance with an international cast and a genuine orchestration: the acclaimed organist and composer Nicholas O’Neill orchestrated and played the organ, in St Peter's Eaton Square. London. (November 2012). In 2013, a fully staged production followed in Park Theatre of Thessaloniki (Open Theatre Festivities/Municipality of Thessaloniki) in collaboration with the Symphony Orchestra of Thessaloniki. The uniqueness in this performance was that both the roles of Jago and Emilia were given to acclaimed Greek actors and not to opera singers: Kassandra created for these roles a spoken text on Verdi's music that was based on Shakespear's play. (July 2013).
I Pagliacci (2012- 2014) The orchestration of this opera was also unique: the classical score was "translated" through the sound of electric guitars. Orchestration was created by Philip Modinos. (December 2012). Performances took place in Thessaloniki (Theatre Aneton, War Museum) and in Athens (Italian Institute of Culture).
